What are the Signs and Symptoms of metabolic syndrome?

Many of the signs and symptoms of metabolic syndrome are not the kinds of things you would notice. For instance you cannot tell if your cholesterol is high without a test. You don’t know what your blood pressure is without having it measured. You don’t know if your insulin is doing its job and changing the sugar in your body into energy. You don’t know if your blood is clotting the way it should. You cannot tell if your kidneys or other organs are working the way they should.

Your weight is the one sign that you may have metabolic syndrome that you would be aware of. If you are overweight, obese, or have gained five pounds or more a year for several years, you will know it. This may be a sign that you have metabolic syndrome. Unfortunately, you may not be aware of the other signs until it is too late and you develop a serious illness such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke.

Your doctor can determine if you have the signs, symptoms, or conditions that lead to metabolic syndrome by measuring your blood pressure, determining your cholesterol levels, and performing other tests. If you are overweight you should schedule regular check ups with a physician.

Having one sign or symptom of metabolic syndrome means you are more likely to have other parts of the syndrome. The more symptoms you have, the higher the risk is that you will develop the syndrome and the serious illnesses that come with it.
