How can I prevent getting HIV/AIDS?

To prevent HIV infection:

  • Do not have unprotected sex. Always use a latex condom. If you are allergic to latex, you can use polyurethane condoms. Natural skin (lambskin) condoms will not protect you.
  • If you are a drug user, do not share needles, syringes or other equipment to inject drugs. Try to quit using drugs. If you have tried to stop using drugs, but have failed, seek professional help. Contact your doctor, local mental health center, county health department or other organizations that specialize in drug (substance) abuse.
